The National Camp in the Netherlands
Again the village of Lemele was the decor of the National Camp for young people with a physical disability. A green oasis where a group of ten participants and eighteen volunteers were warmly welcomed at a farm “Imminkhoeve” in the third week of August.
What made the week extra special was that all participants spoke openly about their lives with a disability. Like Margreet, who got terribly handicapped during a world trip, but still remains positive in life. Pjotr took away the prejudice that people with disabilities are different from 'normal' people. Bob went on holiday for the first time after his accident without his parents: he had a great time and gave the camp a A+!
Returning activities as pigs cuddling on the farm and the day in the old town of Zwolle, were alternated by new initiatives such as the international bazar: accompanied by songs and piano playing we enjoyed French, Italian and American food and delicacies. Every evening ended with a disco, but the camp fire was just as popular. Something that came out very well during the highlight of the camp: the Gala. What could be more romantic than asking your date for a dance and then swarming away by the fireplace?
Everyone could play a special role within the group in his or her way.
We look back with pleasure on a successful week and secretly look forward to the next summer!
