Malteser Albania - Summer Camps for the Roma Children & Children from Marginalised Communities

Malteser Albania - Summer Camps for the Roma Children & Children from Marginalised Communities

For 15 years, the Volunteer Corps of the Order of Malta in Albanian has been organising various activities to support Roma communities.

Since 2001, the Volunteer Corps has organised a Summer Camp for children from marginalised communities near Adriatic Sea. Over 3000 children benefit from this project.

The camp is held on Velipoja beach during July and welcomes Roma and Egyptian children as well as children from remote areas of Northern Albania. These camps give the children and opportunity to enjoy a summer vacation which their parents are unable to provide due to their families economic and social situations. All the children attending the camps are from poor and isolated backgrounds.

The children are split into three groups, with 75 children per shift, mainly Roma and Egyptian, with 15 volunteers per group. There are representatives and parents of Roma and Egyptian communities helping in the camp together with the volunteers.

The Malteser volunteers prepare and set up the camp. The volunteers run educational activities and entertain the children during the camps.

The Volunteer Corps also provide riding and swimming lessons. Under the leadership of the instructors, the children had the chance to be informed and trained in riding horses and swimming......
